ON THE HOP CRAFT BEER TOURS
OUR STORY – WHO WE ARE
The craft beer industry has taken the market by storm, and after 11 years of bringing you the very best South African Winelands travel, Wine Tourism South Africa www.winetourismsouthafrica.co.za would be remiss not to include this delightful new taste experience through our On the Hop tours.
You’ve heard of wine tours – and even indulged in the odd beer-inspired pub crawl, but this is different. Only the very best craft beer – and only on wine farms. That’s right, beer fantastically brewed on the same site wine is lovingly vinified.
We’ve packaged the ultimate experience for craft beer lovers against the magnificent backdrop of the Cape wine farms and all they have to offer.
WHY CRAFT BEER? WHAT’S THE BIG DEAL?
Experts reckon there are over 130 craft breweries operating in South Africa, plus one moerse big commercial one (no names, no prizes). Ten years ago, there was but a handful. There’ll probably be 150 by the time you read this. What happened?
Taste happened, is what – and, we suspect, a considerable drop in the capital on-costs of setting up a brewery. It’s certainly way cheaper than setting up a winery, that’s for sure. And just like boutique wine, boutique beer’s time has come.
So apart from taste and production cost, what makes craft beer the latest big thing? Here are our top five reasons:
Natural ingredients: Besides the key component of any good beer – hops – herbs, fruit and even tea are added for an extra taste dimension
Strength: From a gentle 5- 6% ABV (alcohol by volume) to a kick like an ostrich (40%), craft beers cater for all constitutions, but because they are so special, they are meant to be savoured slowly.
Cost: You pay for quality, right! So something as special as these brews are worth every cent.
Health: with less additives, craft beers contain wholesome doses of soluble fibre, B vitamins (notably folate), a range of antioxidants and it is also the richest source of silicon, which may help counter osteoporosis. Or so says craftbeer.com.
Personal touch: Generally these brew are made by people who really care about beer and are happy to share their artistry with you. South Africa is no different. There are no such things as stupid questions, so ask away and the brewers will no doubt be delighted to answer.
Armed with this knowledge, we guess you’d be intrigued enough to embark on our On the Hop Winery Craft Brewery Tour. Read on to find out more…
WINE AND CRAFT BEER TOURS
We know where to take adventurers for the best Winelands craft beer experience and if you want to taste a little wine along the way we can include that too, And of course, there’s the perfect food accompaniment for every blend – think that firm South African favourite – biltong, Maybe some cheese? Or even a little charcuterie, oui, oui!
To add to this unique experience, each brewery has its own special character – from industrial style brewpubs to pleasant garden-stroke-restaurant settings. The traditional offerings are all there – pale ale, weissbier, lager or stout to name but a few – either on tap or bottled, many some with hand-labelled packaging boasting quirky names that reflect where they come from.
BEER AND WINE – THE PERFECT MATCH
The methods used to make beer and wine makes them good companions.
Both are developed through natural fermentation, with yeast as the basis, it’s just the strains and varieties that differ. Vintners might use the natural yeast found on the grape skin, or add a specific winemaking yeast, while brewers will almost always add a specific yeast.
Both use the alchemy of sugar and yeast to produce alcohol, and both can be aged in barrels, adding a further dimension. Generally, wine benefits from longer aging then does beer. Some ales need only a few days of aging, while other beers like lagers, can take many weeks.
Both beer and wine develop aroma and flavour components derived from ingredients, fermentation and aging. Colour, sweetness, bitterness and acidity all contribute to the composite individuality.
We look forward to welcoming you to touring with On The Hop tours!
